You've asked ChatGPT who the good options are in your category, and it named three businesses. None of them was yours. One was a competitor you don't rate. If you're trying to work out how to get ChatGPT brand mentions, start here: that answer wasn't a ranking, and there's no setting you failed to switch on. ChatGPT named those businesses because its sources name them. You find your mentions by asking and then tracing the answers back, and you increase them by changing what the sources say. Parabolic Studio sells AI search services, not software, and takes no affiliate revenue here.

Whatever theory you arrived with is probably wrong, and it was a reasonable theory to hold. Everything below about how ChatGPT behaves was checked against OpenAI's own documentation on 18 September 2026.

What Counts as a ChatGPT Brand Mention

A ChatGPT brand mention is any instance of your business being named in ChatGPT's answer to a question, whether or not a page of yours is linked, and whether or not the mention is favorable. It's an occurrence, not a position. ChatGPT generates an answer rather than returning a ranked list, so there's no slot you occupy and nothing to be number one at.

Three things get collapsed into one constantly:

  • A mention: you're named. That's the whole bar. It can be a passing reference in a list of five.
  • A citation: a specific page is linked as a source. Rarer, and a separate event. You can be named with no page of yours cited, and cited as a source while barely being named.
  • A recommendation: you're named as the suggested choice. A subset of mentions, and the valuable one.

This article is about mentions in general, including the unflattering and incidental ones. For the buyer-intent case, read how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business. AI visibility is the broader question of how your brand shows up across AI answer surfaces, and we've covered what AI visibility is and how it's measured separately.

Where ChatGPT Brand Mentions Actually Come From

Independent online sources flowing into a speech bubble to illustrate where ChatGPT brand mentions come from.

Here's the part that reframes everything: the assistant names businesses that its sources name. Your website isn't the source. It's corroboration.

Four routes get a business into an answer. The first is what the model absorbed in training, which is why a firm written about in trade press for fifteen years turns up without lifting a finger and a company founded last year doesn't. You can't influence that retroactively. The second is what the assistant retrieves when you ask. OpenAI's documentation states that ChatGPT may search the web automatically when a question would benefit from current information, and that it typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries sent to search providers. That matters more than it sounds: the question searched is rarely the question typed. This is the route you can move in a reasonable timeframe.

The third is third-party material describing your category rather than your company: roundups, directories, review platforms, community threads, trade press. These carry disproportionate weight precisely because they're about the category. The fourth is your own site, which mostly confirms and disambiguates what other sources already say.

Source typeWhat you can realistically do about it
Training dataNothing directly, and nothing quickly. It rewards businesses already being written about.
Live web retrievalThe most workable route. Make sure current, reachable pages describe you accurately, on your site and elsewhere.
Category sources (roundups, directories, reviews, forums)Pitch for inclusion, earn coverage, participate genuinely. Slow, and the strongest route you have.
Your own websiteKeep it consistent, crawlable and unambiguous. It corroborates. It rarely originates a mention alone.
Paid placementNot a route into the answer at all. Ads exist in ChatGPT, separately. See below.

Now the uncomfortable consequence. If almost nothing outside your own website describes what you do, there's nothing for an assistant to draw on, and no amount of on-page work will manufacture it. When we tested 50 Canadian brands for our benchmark study, 19 of them had no description of what they do anywhere except their own website. That isn't a content problem. It's a supply problem, and addressing it is what generative engine optimization is for. If your instinct says this should be solvable with keywords and schema on your own pages, that instinct comes from classical SEO, and the differences between GEO and SEO are worth reading first.

One caution. Nobody outside OpenAI knows how ChatGPT weighs sources, and much of the confident writing on this is pattern-matching dressed up as documentation. The mechanisms above are the ones OpenAI describes, or that follow from them.

How to Find Your ChatGPT Brand Mentions

You're not running a general audit. You're building an inventory: where your name appears, where it doesn't, and what produced each appearance. Three approaches.

  1. Ask the category questions. Not "tell me about my company" but the questions a buyer would actually ask, phrased as a buyer would phrase them. Write down every business named. The businesses named instead of you are the real finding, and most people skip recording them because it stings.
  2. Ask about your company directly. This answers something different: not whether you surface unprompted, but what the assistant has to say when it's forced to say something. Out-of-date descriptions and mix-ups with similarly named firms show up here.
  3. Work backwards from the sources. Where the answer names or cites sources, open them and read what they actually say about you and your competitors. Almost nobody does this, and it's what turns a list of disappointing results into a work list, because it tells you which specific pages are feeding the answer.

Step three is what separates this from a visibility check. A check tells you whether you showed up. This tells you why.

Two caveats. Answers vary between runs, so anything recorded once is an anecdote; continuous measurement is a separate exercise, and we've compared the tools that track ChatGPT rankings elsewhere. And your session conditions matter: OpenAI's documentation notes that saved memories can inform how ChatGPT rewrites a search query, so an account that already knows you isn't a neutral instrument. Use a clean session. If you'd rather have this monitored, we've reviewed the AI visibility tools worth knowing about and how to buy one without getting sold.

How to Read the Mentions You Find

An inventory only helps if you know what each result is evidence of. Three outcomes, pointing in genuinely different directions.

What you foundWhat it's evidence ofFirst thing to do
Not mentioned at allA supply problem. Little outside your own site describes you in terms matching the question.Audit what third-party material covers your category, and where you're absent from it.
Mentioned, but described wrongly or out of dateA consistency problem. Sources exist and disagree, with each other or with reality.Find the specific pages producing that description and get them corrected at the source.
Mentioned accuratelySupply is working. The question is whether you're named as an option or as the answer.Read the framing, not the count. Then find which questions still don't surface you.

The table can't carry the judgment, so here it is in prose. A mention that's accurate but generic is worth less than the count suggests. Being named fifth in a list of five is a different result from being named first, and both register as one mention. How you're described matters more than how often you're named, and a rising count made up of incidental references isn't progress. Read the sentences.

How to Increase Your ChatGPT Brand Mentions

Five levers, ordered by how much they move rather than by how easy they are. That ordering is deliberate and slightly annoying, because the two that work best are the two you can't do this week.

1. Get described by other people, in the places that cover your category

Roundups, directories, review platforms, trade press, partner sites, community discussion. This is outreach and earned coverage, barely technical, which is why teams built around on-page work under-invest in it. Our own keyword research found community threads outranking established agency pages for the main commercial term in Canada. For one professional services client where we built third-party coverage deliberately, the category questions producing a mention went from 2 out of 20 to 9 out of 20 over about seven months.

2. Make your description consistent everywhere it already appears

Same business name, same category words, same location, same claims. Inconsistency doesn't just dilute the signal, it hands an assistant competing accounts and lets it pick. If three directories describe you three different ways, one of those three gets repeated, and it won't necessarily be the one you'd have chosen. Unglamorous, cheap, and higher up this list than most people expect.

3. Publish content that answers the questions your category asks

Answer-first passages, clean definitions, sections that make sense lifted out of context. There's research behind this: Aggarwal and colleagues, in the paper that named generative engine optimization (arXiv preprint, accepted to KDD 2024), found that source-side changes such as adding citations, quotations and statistics raised a source's visibility in generative answers by up to 40%. For execution, see how to rank in ChatGPT and the broader ChatGPT SEO picture. The same instinct drives answer engine optimization, and how answer engines change your strategy covers why format beats keyword here.

4. Fix the entity basics so an assistant can tell who you are

Consistent structured data, one unambiguous organization identity, and the connective detail that separates you from the four other businesses with a similar name. This won't create demand for your category. It prevents the specific failure where an assistant knows a business like yours exists and attaches the description to the wrong one.

5. Make sure any of it is reachable

Crawl access, indexability, the access layer generally. OpenAI's crawler documentation is unusually clear: sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links, and OAI-SearchBot is a separate control from GPTBot, which governs training. Plenty of sites have blocked one meaning to block the other. The llms.txt question sits here too. Last on purpose: necessary, nowhere near sufficient, and over-weighted by readers because it's the only item that feels like a setting.

Levers one and two do most of the work, and neither can be done in an afternoon. That's the honest reason so much advice in this category starts at lever five. If you'd rather have it handled properly than in fragments, that's what our generative engine optimization service does, with the answer-surface side sitting in answer engine optimization and AI search optimization. Google's answer surface runs on related but not identical principles; showing up in AI Overviews covers that.

What Does Not Increase Your Mentions

Most readers have considered at least one of these, and a few have been sold one. None of them work.

  • Paying for placement in the answer. ChatGPT has carried ads in the US since OpenAI began testing them on 9 February 2026, but those sit below a response, labeled sponsored, and are not the same thing as being named in the answer.
  • Hidden text or instructions aimed at the model. Ineffective, and a real reputational risk if anyone finds it.
  • Publishing volume on your own site. Forty thin posts don't create third-party description of your business. They create forty thin posts.
  • Buying mentions or coordinating posts in community forums. Against those platforms' rules, detectable, and when it's caught the resulting thread describes you accurately and permanently.
  • Keyword density on your own pages. It doesn't move an answer drawing on sources somewhere else.

On the first of those, OpenAI is direct:

“Advertisers have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses.”

OpenAI, Ads in ChatGPT, help documentation, checked 18 September 2026

OpenAI's web search documentation adds that ChatGPT ranks results on multiple factors and that placement isn't guaranteed. Parabolic Studio does none of the five things above, and says so when asked.

How Long It Takes to Move

Two different clocks, and conflating them is how people end up disappointed.

Correcting a description that already exists can move fast, provided the source is reachable and gets re-crawled. In one case where we got an inaccurate third-party listing corrected, the updated description was showing up in answers about three weeks later. Building third-party coverage where none exists is a different exercise, measured in quarters, because you're waiting on other people's publishing schedules and editorial judgment.

Anything promising a specific number of mentions by a specific date is describing something nobody controls, us included. What can be committed to is the work: which sources get pursued, what gets corrected, what gets published. Our 2026 Canadian AI search visibility benchmark is where we published what movement at scale actually looked like.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my brand mentions in ChatGPT?

Ask the category questions a buyer would ask and record every business named, then ask about your company directly, then open the sources the answer names or cites. That third step matters most: it tells you which specific pages are producing the answer. Use a clean session and repeat, since answers vary between runs.

Why does ChatGPT mention my competitor and not me?

Almost always because more sources outside their own website describe what they do, in terms that match the question being asked. ChatGPT names the businesses its sources name. It isn't a ranking, your competitor isn't paying for it, and it usually isn't a judgment that they're better. It reflects who has been written about, where, and how consistently.

Can I pay to get my brand mentioned in ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT has carried ads in the US since OpenAI began testing them on 9 February 2026, but those appear below a response, labeled sponsored, and OpenAI states that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter its responses. Being named inside the answer isn't purchasable, and there's no submission form either.

How do I get ChatGPT to mention my business?

Change what the sources say. Get described by the roundups, directories, review platforms and community discussions that cover your category, make that description consistent everywhere it already appears, publish content that answers your category's questions in a liftable form, fix your entity basics, and make sure all of it is crawlable. The first two do most of the work.

Is a ChatGPT mention the same as a citation?

No. A mention means your business is named in the answer. A citation means a specific page is linked as a source for it. They're separate events: you can be named with no page of yours cited anywhere, and you can be cited as a source while hardly being named. Counting them together will give you a misleading picture of where you stand.

How long does it take to increase ChatGPT brand mentions?

It depends which problem you have. Correcting a description that already exists somewhere reachable can move within weeks, once the source is re-crawled. Building third-party coverage where none exists runs in quarters, since it depends on other people publishing. Treat any promise of a fixed number of mentions by a fixed date as a red flag.

Mentions are produced by the sources an assistant can reach, so the work is changing that supply, not changing anything inside ChatGPT. Find your mentions by asking and tracing back. Read how you're described, not just how often. Then work the levers in order, starting with the two that take longest, because those are the ones that hold. Pew Research Center found in June 2026 that 44% of US adults now say they use ChatGPT, up from 34% a year earlier, so the cost of being the business nobody has written about is going up, not down.
