Someone on your board asked ChatGPT for the best firm in your category, didn't see your name, and now wants to know where you rank. There isn't an answer, because there isn't a rank. A ChatGPT rank tracker doesn't report a position. It reports how often you get named across a set of questions you choose. We're a services studio, not a software company, and we take no affiliate money in this category, so what follows is the version we'd give a client over coffee.

Here's the shape of it: what these tools actually measure, why ChatGPT rank tracking can't produce a position one, how to build a prompt set you can defend a year from now, six tools compared on whether they let you run that prompt set, what none of them can tell you, and when the honest answer is to skip the subscription.

What a ChatGPT Rank Tracker Actually Measures

A ChatGPT rank tracker is software that sends a fixed list of questions to ChatGPT on a schedule, records each answer, and reports how often your brand shows up across those answers and how that share moves over time. It doesn't return a ranking position, because ChatGPT doesn't produce one. What it returns is a rate, measured against a prompt set you defined.

Strategy team organizes customer questions into a consistent prompt set for tracking brand visibility in ChatGPT

Three things get tracked. Every tool in the category reports some version of them, under names that vary more than the underlying math does.

MetricWhat it answersWhat moves it
Mention rate Across repeated runs of your prompt set, how often does ChatGPT name your brand at all? How widely your business is described and corroborated across the sources ChatGPT draws on, and how well your prompts match what buyers actually ask.
Citation rate How often does an answer link to one of your pages as a source? Whether your pages are crawlable, answer-shaped, and the most direct available source for the specific claim. Being cited is a rarer event than being named.
Share of voice Your mention rate expressed against a named competitor set on the same prompts. Your own rate, and everyone else's. It can fall while your mention rate holds steady, which is why the competitor list has to be written down.

Mention and citation move independently, and teams conflate them constantly. You can be named in most answers and linked in almost none. You can also be quietly harvested for content and never named at all. If you want the underlying metric explained properly rather than in passing, we've covered what AI visibility is and how it's measured separately.

We've been running fixed prompt sets for client brands since early 2025, and we currently keep about fourteen of them live. The pattern that shows up in almost every one is the same: the number people want is the number that means the least, and the number that means something is the one nobody set up properly.

Why There Is No Position One in ChatGPT

A classical rank tracker works because a search engine returns an ordered list of ten results and that list is broadly stable between two people asking the same thing. ChatGPT doesn't do that. It writes a paragraph. The paragraph is generated, which means asking twice can produce two different answers, and neither of them is a list you can count down.

It also may not search the web at all. Per OpenAI's own help documentation, updated in August 2026, ChatGPT "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information". When it does search, that documentation describes it rewriting your question into one or more targeted queries sent to search partners, reviewing what comes back, and sending further, more specific queries. That's several retrievals feeding one written answer, not one query returning one ranked page.

OpenAI is direct about what this means for placement. The same documentation says ChatGPT "ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information" and then adds, plainly, that placement is not guaranteed. That's the company's own account, as of August 2026, and it's a more honest description of the situation than most of the pages competing for this search.

Three ChatGPT-specific conditions change the answer you get, and all three are documented rather than inferred:

  • Account state and memory. OpenAI's August 2026 documentation says that if memory is enabled, ChatGPT may use relevant saved memories when rewriting a search query. Your own account, with months of history in it, is not a clean instrument for measuring anything.
  • Whether the answer used the web. An answer written without a retrieval step and an answer built from several live queries are different products of the same interface. If you don't record which one you got, you're averaging two things.
  • Locale. That documentation describes ChatGPT using an approximate location from your IP address, with device location optional and off by default. For a Canadian business this matters more than most readers expect, and it's the single condition teams most often leave unrecorded.

None of this makes measurement impossible. It makes measurement a matter of holding conditions still, which is a discipline rather than a purchase. If the underlying question is why the rank metaphor exists at all, that's a legacy of classical search, and we've written about where SEO thinking stops applying to generative engines.

How to Build a Prompt Set You Can Actually Defend

This is the part the tool doesn't do for you, and it's where almost all of the quality of your number comes from. Work through these five in order. Do it once, write it down, and don't change it for at least two quarters.

  1. Write prompts the way buyers ask, not the way you describe yourself. A prompt built on your category label measures category presence. A prompt built on the problem your buyer actually has measures something much closer to demand. The gap between the two is large. On one Vancouver professional services client we ran thirty category-worded prompts and thirty problem-worded prompts over the same two weeks and measured a mention rate of about 31% on the first set and about 9% on the second. Same brand, same engine, same two weeks. The flattering number was the one measuring the wrong thing.
  2. Fix the size of the set and leave it alone. Twenty to fifty prompts covers most small and mid-sized companies. Below twenty, a single prompt swinging moves your headline figure by several points. Above fifty, you're paying for prompts nobody reads the results of. The number matters less than the fact that it stops changing, because every prompt you add or remove silently breaks the comparison with every month before it.
  3. Decide the run count before you look at a single result. One run of a prompt is an anecdote. A rate needs repetition, and repetition has to be decided in advance, otherwise you'll be tempted to re-run anything that came back badly. In practice every mainstream tool runs each prompt once a day, so your repetition accumulates as days rather than as same-day retries. Decide how many days make a reporting period and hold that too.
  4. Hold the conditions constant and write them down beside the numbers. Same locale, same account state, same treatment of memory and personalization. Record them in the same place you record the results, because in six months nobody will remember what the setup was, and a number without its conditions can't be defended or repeated.
  5. Name the competitor set up front. Share of voice without a stated denominator is a marketing number. Write down the four to eight brands you're measuring against, before you see a result, and keep that list as fixed as the prompt list. If a new competitor appears in the answers, note it, but don't quietly add them and restate last quarter.

A worked example. For a fictional Vancouver bookkeeping firm serving trades businesses, a defensible starter set might run: "who should I hire to do bookkeeping for a small construction company in Vancouver", "what does a bookkeeper for trades cost in BC", "bookkeeping software vs hiring a bookkeeper for a contracting business", "how do I fix a year of unreconciled books before tax season", and so on across roughly thirty prompts spanning problem, comparison, and decision stages.

What that set licenses you to say, after a month: "across thirty fixed prompts run daily in Canadian English on a signed-out account, we were named in a quarter of answers, up from a fifth last month." What it does not license you to say: "we rank third in ChatGPT." Nobody ranks third in ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Rank Tracking Tools Compared

Six products, chosen on one question: does this tool let you run the specification above? Not on popularity, and not on how many logos are on the homepage. The columns below exist to answer that question and nothing else. For the wider category, including the tools that do jobs other than monitoring, see our comparison of AI visibility tools rather than treating this shortlist as one.

Every figure here was read off the vendor's own pricing or documentation page, not off somebody else's comparison post. That distinction matters more than usual here, because a large share of the pages ranking for this search are published by companies selling one of the products they're ranking.

Two things fall out of that table that you won't find in most listicles. The first is the column that's the same all the way down: not one of these six publicly documents which ChatGPT answer mode it queries, or whether a retrieval step ran at all. They all report a number. None of them tells you what produced it. That's not a scandal, it's just an unfinished category, but it means the "which tool is most accurate" question has no published answer as of September 2026, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.

The second is that every one of them runs each prompt once per day at most. Repetition in this category is time, not volume. Which means your first defensible reading is weeks away no matter which subscription you pick, and paying more doesn't shorten that.

On the one test that matters here, SE Ranking and Ahrefs Brand Radar's Custom Prompts came out strongest, because both give you a large editable prompt set, the cited URL, and export access at the entry tier. Otterly.AI is the cheapest usable entry point if fifteen prompts covers your category. Profound's entry tier is the only ChatGPT-only option, which is tidy but locks exports behind the next tier. Every one of those judgements holds only for the specification above, and only at September 2026 pricing.

On the buying process itself, the trial design, the questions to put to a vendor, the rollout, we've written that separately in our buyer's guide to AI brand visibility tools, and there's no point repeating it here.

What a Tracker Will Not Tell You

A tracker tells you your mention rate moved. It doesn't tell you which of your pages the assistant drew on, why a competitor got named instead of you, or what to change on Monday. It's an instrument, not a treatment.

It can't write the answer-shaped content that gets a passage picked up, which is the core of answer engine optimization. It can't fix the entity and structured data that decide how an assistant describes your business when it does name you. And it can't build the third-party corroboration that generative engines lean on when working out whether a brand is a real, credible answer. Those are the levers, and none of them live inside a dashboard.

There's a failure mode specific to rates that nobody warns you about. Because the reported figure is a proportion rather than a position, a few points of movement is often just variation. On one client set we left completely unchanged for a month, shipping nothing, the mention rate moved between about 38% and 61% across rolling seven-day windows. A team without someone who can tell a result from noise will spend a year reacting to weather.

This is the part where the correction stops being pedantic and starts costing money. Similarweb's 2026 analysis found AI platform visits up 28.6% between January 2025 and January 2026 while AI referrals to external sites stayed flat over the same period, and separately measured 35% of US consumers using AI at the product discovery stage against 13.6% using search. The decision is happening inside the answer. Waiting for referral traffic to justify the work means measuring the wrong output entirely.

“Businesses need to focus their attention on mentions and influence within Gen AI.”

Kevin Indig, growth advisor, quoted in Similarweb's 2026 generative AI report

The work that moves the number is documented, at least in outline. Aggarwal and colleagues, in GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, a paper accepted to KDD 2024, showed content-side changes lifting visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%, with effectiveness varying sharply by domain. Which is the honest version: the levers work, and which ones work depends on your category.

So: generative engine optimization is the discipline, how to rank in ChatGPT is the engine-specific execution, our complete ChatGPT SEO guide is the wider picture, and our AI search optimization service is the done-for-you route. Buy the tracker if somebody is going to act on what it says. If nobody is, spend the money on the work and check by hand each quarter.

When You Do Not Need a ChatGPT Rank Tracker

Three situations where the subscription is the wrong purchase, and what to do instead.

  • You don't have enough published on the topic yet. If there are four pages on your site about what you do and nothing about it anywhere else, a prompt set will return zeros for months and you'll have paid to watch that happen. Publishing has to come before measuring. Build the corroboration first, start tracking when there's something to detect.
  • Your category is narrow enough to check by hand. A specialist firm with a handful of real competitors and a dozen questions worth asking can get the same signal from a manual check once a month as from a subscription, for nothing. If that's you, our walkthrough of how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business is a better use of the next hour.
  • Nobody is assigned to act on it. This is the common one. A dashboard with no owner produces a screenshot in a monthly deck and no decisions. A quarterly manual check is cheaper, just as informative, and honest about the fact that the number isn't driving anything yet.

The agency and in-house leads reporting this monthly have a different problem: not finding a number, but defending one that moved without an obvious cause. The fix is the same as the specification above. Fix the prompt set, record the conditions, and report the rate with its denominator attached, every single time.

Tracking ChatGPT Alongside Other Assistants

Two things worth knowing before you buy a ChatGPT-specific tool. The first is that mostly you can't. Five of the six above are multi-engine products where ChatGPT is one input among several, and only Profound's entry tier is ChatGPT-only. If you're shopping for a ChatGPT tracker you're almost certainly buying a general AI visibility tool and switching the others off.

The second is that engines differ substantially in how often they cite external sources at all, and in how they select them. We're not going to put a number on that difference, because the widely quoted cross-engine citation rates circulating in this category mostly trace back to nothing checkable. Qualitatively, though, it's enough to make a single blended score across four engines hide more than it shows. Report per engine, or report one engine.

For the surfaces beyond ChatGPT, how to show up in AI Overviews covers Google's answer layer, and llms.txt explained covers the crawl and access side that determines whether any of them can read you in the first place. Check that layer first. OpenAI's documentation, as of August 2026, states that eligibility for inclusion requires allowing OAI-SearchBot to crawl your site and permitting traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses. If that's blocked, no tracker will tell you why your number is zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChatGPT have rankings?

No. ChatGPT generates a written answer rather than returning an ordered list of results, so there's no position one and no position three to occupy. What exists instead is a rate: how often your brand is named, or linked, across repeated runs of a fixed set of questions. OpenAI's own documentation, updated in August 2026, states that placement is not guaranteed.

What is a ChatGPT rank tracker?

It's software that sends a fixed list of prompts to ChatGPT on a schedule, stores every answer, and reports how often your brand appears across them. The three figures it reports are mention rate, citation rate, and share of voice against a competitor set you name, all of which sit under the broader question of what AI visibility is and how it's measured. The name is a holdover from classical SEO; nothing in it is a rank.

How can I check my AI ranking?

Write twenty to fifty prompts phrased the way buyers ask, not the way you describe yourself. Name your competitor set in advance. Run the prompts on a schedule under fixed conditions, recording locale and account state alongside every result. Then read the rate over weeks, not days. The prompt set decides the quality of what you learn far more than the tool does.

What is the best ChatGPT rank tracking software?

For running a defensible prompt set, SE Ranking and Ahrefs Brand Radar's Custom Prompts came out strongest in our September 2026 check, on prompt volume, cited-URL reporting and export access at the entry tier. Otterly.AI is the cheapest way in at fifteen prompts. That holds only while the specification is what you're buying for; if you want a broad category comparison instead, that's a different shortlist.

How much do ChatGPT rank trackers cost?

Entry pricing across the six tools we checked on 11 September 2026 ran from $29 to $199 USD a month, with prompt allowances between fifteen and a hundred. Price tracks prompt volume and engine count more than it tracks capability. A cheap tool running your prompt set properly beats an expensive one running somebody else's.

Is there a free tool that can track AI rankings?

Several vendors offer free one-off visibility checks, and most paid tools have trials. What's generally not free is continuous tracking of your own prompt set over months, which is the part that produces a defensible trend. For a narrow category with few competitors, checking a dozen prompts by hand each month costs nothing and tells you nearly as much.

How accurate is ChatGPT rank tracking?

Accurate enough to show direction over months, not precise enough to justify reacting to a few points week to week. With every mainstream tool running each prompt once daily, a month gives you roughly thirty samples per prompt. A fixed set under fixed conditions can establish a trend. It can't establish that a given change caused it.

ChatGPT doesn't have positions, so a ChatGPT rank tracker gives you a rate, and that rate only means something measured against a prompt set you fixed and conditions you wrote down. Pick the tool that lets you run your specification rather than its own. And remember that no tracker closes the gap it reports: the mention rate moves when your content, your entity data and your third-party corroboration move, which is work that happens outside the dashboard.

Parabolic Studio builds AI search visibility for BC brands across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.
